What is an allowance?

An allowance is the fixed dollar amount that a health insurance company will pay for a particular covered service.

Health insurance companies sign contracts with medical providers to be part of their plan's network.

As network members, these doctors and hospitals agree to accept this "allowed amount" as full payment for their services.

Providers who are "out of network", are not restricted in what they can charge.
