What is a benefit trigger?

In long term care insurance (LTCI) benefits are "triggered"by the insured persons inability to perform normal activities of daily living (see ADLs), such as bathing, dressing and eating, or because of severe cognitive impairment, such as alzheimer's disease.

Before the insurance company will pay benefits, a medical professional must certify that the insured needs "substantial assistance"  to avoid harm to themselves.

In choosing between LTCI policies it is helpful to compare the how company defines "substantial assistance".
